My First ‘Grown-Up’ Perfume… Or Maybe Two

by admin April 8, 2026

So everyone has that “one” perfume—their first “adult” or “grown-up” scent. For me, it might actually be two… or maybe even both.

The first one takes me back to when I was about 14 years old. We were in a Sears department store. My parents weren’t particularly wealthy, so buying perfume was usually out of the question. However, my dad had just gotten a new job with a significant increase in income, and for once, we were allowed to pick out something we wanted (within reason, of course).

I had every intention of buying new clothes, but as I walked through the fragrance aisle on my way to the clothing section, something stopped me. I don’t remember exactly which perfume it was, but something about that moment drew me in.

As I sat down to write about my first “grown-up” perfume, I initially only thought about the one I’m about to mention. But as I started writing, I was suddenly transported back to that Sears store. It all clicked, and I realized—that was where my true olfactory journey began.

As I wandered around trying different perfumes, one completely stopped me in my tracks: Cacharel Anaïs Anaïs. This fragrance has been around since 1978, and it has this incredibly nostalgic, almost comforting quality.

The top notes include bergamot, black currant, galbanum, hyacinth, honeysuckle, lavender, lemon, and white lily. The heart expands into a lush bouquet of carnation, iris, jasmine, lily, lily of the valley, Moroccan jasmine, orris root, rose, tuberose, and ylang-ylang. It settles into a base of amber, cedar, incense, leather, oakmoss, patchouli, sandalwood, and vetiver.

Anaïs Anaïs was actually the very first perfume released by Cacharel, and it remains one of the most nostalgic scents across generations—my parents’, mine, and maybe even my children’s one day.

It’s the kind of fragrance that transports you. It reminds me of that one cool, sophisticated aunt who shows up for birthdays and holidays—effortlessly elegant. She appears in the doorway like a quiet statement, asks how you’ve been, and pulls you into a delicate hug before handing you a card with something special tucked inside.

There’s a strange familiarity to the scent. A soft swirl of incense wrapped in florals, grounded by sandalwood and amber. It feels warm, nostalgic, and quietly refined.

That memory leads me to my second “first” grown-up perfume: Valentino Donna Born in Roma.

While they share some overlapping notes, they couldn’t feel more different. Donna Born in Roma opens with bergamot, black currant, and pink pepper, followed by jasmine, jasmine sambac, and jasmine tea. It dries down into bourbon vanilla, cashmeran, and guaiac wood.

I had just decided to purchase Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Eau Intense as my first designer perfume as an adult. While the sales associate was preparing it, another associate approached me and sprayed Donna Born in Roma on my wrist.

I remember thinking, “Wow… this smells expensive. This smells grown.”

I immediately added it to my purchase.

To this day, it’s one of the few perfumes I consistently repurchase the moment I run out—which says everything about how much I love it.

So, can someone have two “first grown-up” perfume experiences?

I think the answer is yes.

I Thought I Smelled Good… Until I Discovered Layering

I thought I knew what a good fragrance smelled like… until I realized I’d only been smelling half the story.

When I first stepped into the fragrance world, I had no idea what layering even was. I didn’t realize how much creativity goes into it—or how it can completely transform your entire olfactory experience.

In my last post, I shared how this journey started. But what I didn’t say is this: my husband—the one who sparked my love for scents—also introduced me to something that completely changed everything for me.

One day, he walked past me wearing Maison Margiela’s Replica Bubble Bath and Replica Sailing Days—and I literally stopped in my tracks. It was the freshest, most beautiful thing I had ever smelled. Clean, airy, soft… but also aquatic and alive.

I was confused. I could smell Bubble Bath, but also Sailing Days. So I asked him, “Which one are you wearing?”

He said: both.

My mind was blown.

At the time, I didn’t experiment much myself—I only had my original two bottles, and layering felt almost… advanced. But that moment stuck with me.

Fast forward to a recent cologne shopping trip. He picked up a couple of new scents, including Alberto Rossi’s Santal Oud, and somehow it layered perfectly with Duke Cannon’s Seawolf. That’s when it clicked again—layering isn’t random… it’s intentional, creative, and honestly kind of addictive.

So when I finally got my hands on my 12-bottle collection, I started experimenting for real.

My first combo? Chloe + Bubble Bath.

And wow… it was divine.

The kind of scent that lingers and makes people turn their heads. I’d hear things like, “Do you smell that?” “Yeah… but who is it?” And the best part? It wasn’t just one fragrance—it was the combination.

That’s when I fell all the way down the rabbit hole—scents, layering, and everything in between.

If I’m being honest, layering is at least 50% of the reason Fragrantfiend even exists today.

I Didn’t Care About Perfume… Until This Happened

The smell that started it all…

For most of my life, I wasn’t focused on appearance or aesthetics—but I always cared about how I smelled. I was a body spray and mist kind of person, and if I’m being honest, I thought luxury perfumes were a little unnecessary.

At the time, I wasn’t someone who spent money on things like that. It just didn’t feel like something I needed.

That began to change because of my husband.

He had a genuine passion for fragrance—researching notes, learning compositions, and constantly exploring new scents. I remember watching from the sidelines, not fully understanding the appeal. To me, it felt like a bit much for something you just spray on.

The Moment Everything Changed

We went to Dillard’s to look for a cologne he had smelled in passing and really liked. While we were searching for it, an associate approached me and sprayed Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Eau de Toilette on my skin.

I liked it—but I remember saying it felt a little too light.

That’s when she reached for Light Blue Eau Intense Eau de Parfum and sprayed it next.

The moment I smelled it, everything changed. It was deeper, richer, and more lasting—and I instantly knew… I had to have it.

That day, I walked out with my first high-end fragrances, including Valentino Donna Born in Roma—and without realizing it, I had just stepped into a completely new world.

When It Became a Ritual

At first, my collection was small. I rotated through a few favorites and didn’t think much beyond that.

The next year, after I had finally run out of Light Blue Intense, I went back to repurchase it. While I was there, an associate—shy, but confident—approached me and asked me to smell Marc Jacobs Perfect.

The moment I did, it felt just like the first time I experienced Light Blue Intense. That same feeling—that same this is it moment. I knew instantly I had to have it.

From that point on, it became a ritual. Every year when I ran out, I would go back and repurchase both Light Blue Intense and Marc Jacobs Perfect—without even thinking twice.

But over time, something shifted.

More Than Just Fragrance

Fragrance became more than just something I wore.

It became comfort. Confidence. A reset.

I work in a high-stress environment, and during that time, I was also going through some personal challenges. There were days that felt overwhelming—like everything was piling up at once.

One day, in the middle of one of those moments, I caught a whiff of Marc Jacobs Perfect on myself… and almost instantly, my mood shifted.

It sounds simple, but it was real. I felt lighter. Calmer. More like myself again.

That’s when I truly understood—fragrance wasn’t just about smelling good.

It had the power to ground me, uplift me, and bring me back to myself when I needed it most.

Why I Created Fragrant Fiend

As my curiosity grew, so did my collection. With the help of a friend, I started exploring more intentionally—testing new scents, learning what I loved, and discovering the artistry behind each bottle.

But along the way, I kept running into the same problem:

I had questions… and nowhere gave clear, simple answers.

Everything felt either too complicated or too surface-level.

That’s when my husband encouraged me to look at it differently. He told me—why not become the answer to the questions you’ve been asking?

He suggested I start sharing my experiences, what I was learning, and the answers I was finding with others who might be in the same place.

And the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.

I’ve always loved to write, to read, to research—to really dive into something and understand it. So instead of continuing to search for answers, I decided to start creating them.

That’s how Fragrant Fiend was born.

A space where I can explore my own journey with fragrance, document what I discover, and share it with others who might be looking for the same clarity I once needed.

Because I know I’m not the only one who’s ever wondered where to start.

And if you’re here, maybe you’ve wondered the same thing too.
